Play fighting??

Hi wonder if anyone can help me, I have a chihuahua who is aapprox 13 weeks old, my fiance has a rottie who is approx 16 weeks old. Onbviously the rottie is massive compared to the chi. My chi is male and the rottie is female by the way.

When they are playing, the chi gets so worked up he bites hold of the rotties face etc and she tolerates this for a small while then she knocks him over or trys to jump on him so obviously i am concerned about the chi being hurt, he usually goes back to his bed for a moment then gets straight back up and does it again. I know they are both puppies and playing but would you suggest trying to keep them more seperated until older etc? sorry i am not sure what to do just feels like abit of a battle they have their own areas in the living room with their own beds and they know not to go and lay on each others.
any help would be appreciated thanks

totally understand where you are coming from Rotties are big dogs and VERY clumsy at that age, i would recommend you find someone who has a STABLE older dog, that isnt too much bigger than the Chi, your Chi needs to learn how to be told off in a "safe way". neither the Rott nor the Chi has done anything wrong, they both need to learn boundaries, but unfortunately pups arent very good at learning good manners from each other lol.
So go find yourself either a training class that allows off lead socialisation or find a friend who has a trustworthy dog, which wil tell of the young'uns if they overstep the mark

thankyou for the fast reply! I dont know anyone with an older dog and have been looking into classes with both of the dogs, we do have 3 children though so its just fitting it all around that too. Like you said neither of the dogs are doing anything wrong just play fighting and dont realise the size difference, just dont want to end up at the vets with a massive bill for my chi getting hurt accidentely

I assume the two pups live together in the same house?

All I can say is that you will have to be very careful and supervise them at all times. Larger breed puppies often don't have much self awareness (in terms of their size, strength, etc.) and toy breeds tend to think they are big dogs trapped in a little body. This can obviously lead to accidents.

I've had a larger breed puppy and a toy breed puppy at similar ages (NOT recommended by the way, to anyone reading this!) and unfortunately did have to separate them lots and distract them onto something else when they got too rough. Now the terrier just sticks up for herself and tells my bigger girl to bog off if she is annoying her, so thankfully I do not have to supervise anymore.

Unfortunately you'll just have to be extremely patient and stick with it. They are only babies at the moment, both of whom are unaware of their sizes. Until they start gaining some awareness and maturing a bit, you will have a battle on your hands in dealing with them. I know all about that; mine left me shattered at times.

I presume that given their ages, they are both going for regular walks now? and that you are doing (or going to do) training classes?

yes we have been looking into lessons there is a localish one that specialises in rotties but my fiance doesnt drive so i would have to take him there etc but thats not a problem we would work something out. But yes lessons are a great idea and yes the rottie does go for regular works and obviously walks alot futher than the chi. He is only 3 and a half pounds in weight and doesnt really like walking although i have been trying to take him out every day even for a short while to get him used to it. He is also very well socialised as i take him into town and to pick my kids up from school too. Its just when he is around the rottie he gets over excited and then starts biting her.

Oh dear, its gonna be a bit of work for you for a while
I would supervise them together at all times
I would let them play a little if it is gentle and friendly but as soon as either of them gets a bit excited then separate

2 puppies together is hard work - 2 puppies of such different sizes is even harder work

It will be worth it in the end - but it can take quiet a while for dogs to realise how big they are

I used to go to training classes with a lady with a newfie, she also had a chi
The newfi was so careful in class when asked to 'sit' she would check behind her to make sure it was safe to sit and she wouldnt squish anything

aww that is so sweet that the dog checked to make sure it didnt sit on anything or anyone! lol

Thanks for all the replies, we knew it was going to be hard work, just didnt know how the chi was going to react to the rottie as the chi was here a few weeks before the rottie.

Hopefully once they have had more training they will be able to understand their sizes abit more

just a friendly bit of advice; larger breeds such as rotts shouldnt get very long walks, the rule of thumb is 5 mins per month (in age) you need to be very careful that you dont damage the joints at such a young age
so basically your rott and chi should be having the same amount of exercise
