Right, OK, I think I understand that bit now. Also I notice from the Crufts site that coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd in Novice doesn't qualify you anyway.

That makes sense to me, I will follow that advice and only enter him for Junior, thanks. I've never been to a single breed show before so it is partly just being there and seeing all the dogs that will be fun (hopefully). If my boy does well that will be a bonus, although the rate his moult is going he is likely to be bald by then!

Many thanks, have learned a lot

Twice now at champ shows I have missed out on the challenge due to being beaten in the first class but winning the second. Having said that, I am of the mind that if the judge liked my dog enough, they will give me the first in the other class too. The second class is GC, plus I always do a stakes.

At an open show, I will enter the breed, AV if possible and a stakes. Though the last show I went to we were kept waiting for a very long time for the stakes, whereas at champ shows the stakes happen while some breeds are still being judged.

There is a big difference between Open and Champ shows these days, a possible exception being Breed Club Open shows. As mentioned before Junior can be a very strong class, which may contain CC or RCC winners. Novice is usually a lower standard as nobody stays in that class for long. For whatever reason the KCGC classes tend not to be well supported by established breeders - probably because most of them are only interested in training for the showring or specialist performance tests. (Gun work, Hound trailing, IPO etc.).

I've entered him for Junior now so we'll have to wait and see. I would be so proud if he qualified for Crufts (even though I probably wouldn't enter him there!) but I'm not expecting anything. It will be good experience for both of us though I hope, and a good day out.

I'd love to enter him for the obedience classes but he's a teenage hooligan at the moment so it really would be a bit pointless. Maybe in future we could go down that road as that definitely suits me more than showing.
