There has been an increase in the number of cases of parvo in the UK over the last couple of years. This has been initially linked, in some instances to immunising pups too early, when they may still have their mother's immunity.
It is a concern.
There have been suggestions that there is also a new 'strain' of parvo out there.
Parvo, as we all know is a deadly disease and is not a nice way for a dog to die.
It is good to know this info, thanks Christine. It is also VITAL that we discuss how big a risk parvo is with our own vets in our own areas and how effective they feel the vaccine is. These reports haven't been proved and so we need to ensure, as we all do anyway, that our dogs are as protected as they possibly can be against this killer and deadly disease.

I understand the suspected increase in parvo to be due to lack of efficacy of the vaccines Ramble.

**but it appears that there is an emerging trend towards reduced effectiveness in immunisation against this disease** Thats what the VDM is saying.

Robust good health in dogs is a major way of preventing diseases in them

Surely reporting it is a good thing?

I agree Mahooli, reporting it is important.
It is also important to say parvo is a nasty killer and so until we know for sure, immunisation, particularly of pups, is important.
I do think it is important this info is out there, I just worry that people will think it's not worth bothering to immunise pups...when it so is!

I`d say the first &most important thing to do is if any dog starts to suffer with parvo like symptoms, ask the vet to do fecal & blood tests to determine whats causing it. Print off & show him the VMD statement.
If parvo is confirmed then report it

As for immunisation of pups, I`d run titre tests to see when the best time to vaccinate would be, tests will determine waning maternal antibodies. 2 wks after vaccinate titre again to see if pups have immunity

ps thanks for the *thanks* folks, anytime
