He hates my scales!

Hi guys, wanted to see if you could help me on this one.

I just got a new set of mechanical scales for my kitchen. I just got them out and put them on the counter. If I touch them or go near them, he barks like crazy! Goes completely mad!

He was the same with the soda stream but I could sort of understand that one, maybe the noise it made was at a painful frequency for him or something. But the mechanical scales - haven't got a clue!

Maybe try putting them on the floor and letting him have a sniff so he knows they arent sinister?

Well that was... Interesting. He seems fascinated by the needle moving and has had a quack at them and put his head in the dish.

Soon as I picked them up to put them back he started yelling at them again.

sorry but that did make me giggle
How about giving him a treat when he gives them a sniff and doesn't bark or sit with him on the floor while he's sniffing them? Sounds to me like he is scared of them, could be wrong as im no behavioural expert

Hello Tina I would say Hannah is right ,Bulbie sees the scales as a threat. Maybe he associates them with something that scared him in the past.

You could try to get Bulbie used to them by putting them somewhere on the floor out of the way not in a place where they threaten his safety (like near his bed or where he has to pass them to go out ) .
I woulld not draw his attention to them or try to get him to go near them. Ignore them completely but put some high value treats that Bulbie likes cheese/chicken maybe a little distance from them . If Bulbie takes the treats put more a little nearer to the scales and repeat until they are touching.
This may take a few days or a couple of hours, the main thing is that Bulbie is allowed to get used to them in his own time without being threatened by them

how odd but i agree he just a bit freaked out by them.

Phoebe dislikes anything new and fussed about for a day or 2 over my new kitchen bin.
