New type of spay

I heard today that the spaying of female dogs is done by keyhole surgery and only the ovaries are removed. Has anyone else heard of this? Does that form of surgery reduce the risk of pyo or could they still get it? Would this reduce the risk of post spay incontinence?

If the uterus remains, the risk of pyo remains. I really fail to see the benefit of removing the ovaries but not the uterus.

"spay" incontinence has not been proved to be caused by spays at all, and is a bit of a myth.

A good vet can perform a spay procedure through a pretty small incision.

If the ovaries are gone, there are no hormones to run the risk of pyo so, yes, it is as effective. It will probably cost you a lot more but the recovery time will be quicker. Not all vets will perform it though.

One of my dog walking pals mentioned it yesterday but I had never heard of it. Is it widely available or just at veterinary colleges? I would imagine that the equipment for keyhole surgery is very specialised, but then they could use it for other procedures and exploratory ops maybe?

I'm sorry, but thats not how it works. No hormones, yes. But uterus still exists. The potential for infection still exists. Just because they no longer go through heat, doesn't completely eliminate that chance.

I just don't see the point in leaving the uterus. To what benefit? The incision for a total OHE is very small already!

It would make the op less serious hence a faster recovery time, fewer complications and less anaestheisa. It would put it on a par with male castration which is not such an invasive procedure as a full spay.

If I had a bitch and if I was considering a spay and if it was available I would certainly consider it.

hi

keyhole spaying is not new.... absoloutely no way i would have a bitch of mine spayed that way....spaying is an op that 'bleedouts' are a very big possibility...yes a smaller incision looks better to the owner but im sticking with the traditional way (simply incase of complications in surgery, and easier access)

...... 3 of my bitches are spayed not one has ui

eta.... if youve ever seen a 'bleed out' u may change your mind re keyhole

I was hoping you would happen along Layla. That's interesting, I didn't know that they were even available until yesterday. If there are more complications then that makes them far less attractive. The size of the scar wouldn't be a factor for me.

hiya

..... its not that there are more complications..... but access to where you want to be is limited if there was.

all my bitches were fine after 5 days traditionally 'spayed' and seeing whats involved in a spay i personally will stick with traditional..... for now .

my vet has offered it for a couple of years, personally can't see the point, its more expensive naturally, but when asked the recovery time was the same, still needed restricting for 10 days after, i also have 4 bitches that have been spayed conventionally, none have incontinence problems
