I replace my printer about six months ago wit a Canon Pixma MP110, its also a copier and scanner. I chose it mostly because the ink is very cheap for it, but I am also really pleased with the quality - especially photos

I have an Epson (SC740, probably obsolete?) which does a good job, when it's in the mood. To get it in the mood may, however, require you to give it a good kicking! I had a Hewlett Packard for a while, but I learned to hate it, because it took far too many holidays, and cost a fortune to run (INK!).

I got the HP online, delivered, for about £50, but its first set of replacement cartridges cost $57 - cheaper to get a new printer, so I junked it and resurrected the Epson.

Connections may vary with Epsons, though, especially if, like me, you use a Mac. With a Mac, the Epson connects via an "Apple 8-pin", which isn't that reliable. Resurrecting the Epson involved finding a little snap-off tab, which hid a USB port. This worked, and gave the printer a new lease of life. Unfortunately, it's getting a bit harder to find cartridges to fit it - you can find them if you look, though.

I have found, however, that certain Epson models are very susceptible to dust (and Borderf Collie hair!) and need to be kept covered when not in use. Whether this applies to other printers, I can't say: the HP I had didn't last long enough for me to find out!

A friend had one of those Dell multi-purpose scanner/printer/copier jobs, but found it massively expensive, so he junked it for a Lexmark (I think). At least he doesn't complain about it like he did the Dell!

When the Epson behaves, it is a very good printer for photos, when you use proper photo paper - possibly a good point for digicam buffs?

Next time I need a new printer, I'm going to assess the cost of cartridges first, as the manufactureres seem more dedicated to selling pricy ink than to making an economical printer that works well No doubt someone od DW will have some reasonable suggestions - so asking about is a great idea!

I'd love a nice, Mac-compatible laser printer (possibly with a G5 dual processor Mac to go with it, but I need a lottery win first

It all depends what you want to use it for just normal printing of word documents or for photos CD/DVD.

Like stewart said epsom do a good range checkout the r200 & r300 with these you can edit pics on the printer plus you can print direct on to CD/DVD if you got the right disks or even if have stuck on the blank face

My last 3 have been Epson and I have always been pleased with them, at the moment I have a Photo 950 - I do a lot of specialist printing and also print DVD's, CD's and cards and this has served me well, although it is now nearing the end of it’s life. The ink is expensive but if you are prepared to try, some of the cheaper inks work well enough for most needs.

Have used HP and Brother in the past but will not be repeating the experience. Think a lot depends on what you want to print as to which printer is the best buy, sometimes those that do everything are not the best buy for your particular needs, as, like people they may be ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’

I used to like Epson but don't like their anti-competitive actions in recent months eg

This will reduce the availability of compatible cartridges
