As with in humans, second hand smoke has been associated with various cancers in pet dogs, such as lung cancer and nasal cancers.

I can see that it would make sense for it to affect dogs in the same way - yet lung cancer in dogs is fairly rare. Perhaps the period of time it takes to affect them is longer than their average life span?

Maybe. We don't really know a lot with regards to genetic predisposition etc.

I have no idea about the actual incidence of lung cancer in dogs, but I do vaguely recall there being some evidence that the incidence is increased (something like 60%!!??) in smoking households.

This risk was, rather interestingly (I thought) restricted to dogs with shorter muzzles however.

Three of my Beardies who lived with the co owner died from Lung Cancer, which was at the time, fairly rare in dogs. Both she & her husband were heavy smokers & in the opinion of my vet this was a huge contributing factor
