Unbelievable - pup in arms at show!

We were at the Great Eccleston Agricultural show at the weekend... dogs are very welcome there, but must be kept on a lead, and obviously, there is a lot of livestock around so must be behaved etc.

We were at the dog show tent most of the afternoon, with Murphy, and were approached by a family who had a tiny Boxer puppy "in arms" there.

They had bred a litter and had "got rid of all but this one" and wanted to know if we wanted her. She was 9 weeks old, un-vaccinated, and had been brought out in arms to an agricultural show on one of the hottest days of the year so far, all to see if they could sell her

I was aghast! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for socialising dogs when they are young, but to bring a tiny pup out in that environment to sell it beggars belief.

We politely declined the offer (although she was a lovely little pup) and then suggested that they might have more success in selling her by advertising locally and vetting potential owners, rather than bringing her and hoping to push her off on the first person they saw.

Don't think they were too happy......

A similar thing happened at Dorset Steam Festival, but these were been sold out of the boot of a car. A young couple took pity on one of the dogs after the breeder threatened to drwon it if the pup didnt sell.
They came on the creche looking for food, the poor thing was riddled with worms and full of fleas and appeared undernourished.
Luckily i had my medical kit with me so we wormed it and frontlined it and sent them on there way with a bag of puppy food and instructions to go straight to there vet. We drove to the carparks with the police but the guy had gone, probably just as well or i mighty have been arrested.

Beggars belief doesn't it??? I'm all for socialising pups but not an unvaccinated one at an agricultural show...and certainly not to sell. Morganstar that story is just truly awful.

To take dogs to sell them beggers belief but I'm not sure I approve of very young puppies going to these kinds of things anyway. Time enough when they are fully inoculated.
Went to a fun day being run by The Dogs Trust Kennilworth yesterday & there was a puppy there in a man's arms. their dog not for sale but he said he couldn't put it down as it hadn't had its second injection & was 11 weeks old. Now I know my vet is happy for a puppy to go out in its immediate enviroms & meet fully innoculated dogs after the first injections but a fun day with dozens of strange dogs which you know nothing about is not sensible in my opinion

Afraid this sort of thing happens all the time, you will se a lot of this at horse shows...(mainly JR`s).... it is how a friend of mine got one of her boys ( JR) , someone was going round selling JR puppies..... it was the last of the second litter she had sold on that day...

They know people will be smitten with the cute factor of a puppy.... just like my firend was . Plus she did not want these people to take pup back home with them.

As for taking a pup out in arms.... sometimes it is unavoidable (dont mean like the above)

We had only had Bandit a wk,(9wks) when my duaghter had a compition to go to... we took Bandit with us...we did have the added bonus of having a horsebox...which he slept in most of the day..but we did carry him around inside my coat if he came out with us...we did ot alow any contact with other dogs, or him going down on the ground

From that day he loved going in the horse box...came with us everywhere....

Oh, we took both Max and Murphy out in arms a lot when we first got them (not so much after about 14/15 weeks cos they were so big), does wonders for socialisation.

And as you say, sometimes it is unavoidable, or a necessity; even when you'd rather not do it.

Don't see anything wrong with taking a puppy out in arms. I did it myself with mine when I had them, but not to a dog show that's what I felt was wrong. OK the pup was in arms but so many bugs are airborne & there were a lot of dogs there including parades of dogs from the centre looking for homes, display teams from local clubs & all the exhibitors in the fun show.
