Jacko ~ Gorgeous Friendly Boy – 3yo Black Greyhound

Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK.

Dear Jacko is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who was in danger of being put to sleep as he is no longer able to race. This gorgeous lad doesn’t seem to have had the best of times – he has an old break in his wrist that doesn’t appear to have been fixed properly, and his coat is very poor at the moment. We are hoping that he will soon improve with lots of good food, TLC and a soft warm bed to sleep on. He has an undershot bottom jaw, giving him a bit of a ‘badger’s snout’, but we think this just adds to his gorgeousness. It certainly doesn’t bother him at all.

Jacko is a big black boy who is sure to be just stunning once he regains some health and condition. Many people are often turned off by black dogs, but black greyhounds actually end up looking incredibly sleek and shiny, especially in the sunlight. Because of this they often attract more attention and admiration than other coat colours.



~ Personality ~
Jacko is a lovely friendly boy despite his harsh past. He loves a bit of fuss and likes to lean on you for some hugs. He is a newcomer to our kennels and so is still settling, but we will update with his progress very soon. Please don’t let this deter you from enquiring about this gorgeous boy however.



~ In the Home ~
Jacko has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. Usually the big boys end up being total couch potatoes once they adjust to life off the track, and the most difficult part of living with Jacko might be getting him up in the morning, especially if its raining!



~ Other Animals ~
Jacko enjoys meeting other dogs, though can be a bit vocal and assertive. This should settle over the next few weeks as he adjusts to the change in routine and also since he was neutered very recently. He has not been tested yet with smaller dogs or cats, but these can be carried out prior to adoption. Often ex-racing greyhounds need a bit of socialisation with smaller dog breeds as they would never have seen them before, and at the start may not realise they are dogs!



~ Out and About ~
Like most greyhounds, will be a total lazy boy once he settles and will not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week.

~ Medical Issues ~
As already mentioned, Jacko has an old fracture to his wrist which has been gradually healing as is for some time. He has been seen by a vet and has had it x-rayed, with the conclusion that it would be best to just leave it now as it is so far along in its healing process. It doesn’t pose him any issues on his walks, it just makes his leg look a wee bit misshapen.



~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.

Jacko is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him.

Jacko is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. Dear Jacko is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound boy. He is a big black hound at about 28” to the shoulder who is sure to be just stunning once he regains some health and condition. Many people are often turned off by black dogs, but black greyhounds actually end up looking incredibly sleek and shiny, especially in the sunlight. Poor Jacko has been with us since March with no interest at all thus far, not even for a temporary foster placement to get him out of kennels. However he recently got some special attention from the talented Madaboutgreys Photography (http://www.madaboutgreys.com/) and has a beautiful mug shot to show for it!

He is generally very well behaved and does want is asked, especially if doing so results in a yummy treat! This boy just needs a chance in a home environment to show us his true personality.

This response is purely due to Jacko confusing the small terrier types with something to chase, and it will go away with lots of positive but safe socialisation so that he learns that they are actually small dogs. He will need an owner/fosterer who understands this, knows what to expect and is happy to work with him on it.

Like most greyhounds, Jacko will be a total lazy boy once he settles into a home and will not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. He walks well on the lead and loves other greyhounds and people, it's just currently small non-greyhound shaped dogs that confuse him.
