Introducing a new pup

Hello all,

I have a 2yr old yellow lab, he is extremely excitable around other dogs when we are out. We have just bought a Springer Spaniel bitch pup.

The lab will not leave the pup alone, he is constantly trying to mount her, lick her and nudge her. The pup has started to snap back at the lab. I understand that the two dogs need to sort themselves into a pack order and I should try not to intervene but how far do I let them go. Is there a chance one will do serious damage to the other???

Anyone got any adivce?

Hi Simon and welcome to Dogsey

I would try separating them say with a dog/baby gate so they can still see each and your older dog can get used to the puppy gradually. Once he is used to it 'the novelty' of having a puppy around should wear off a bit .

How old is the puppy, has it been vaccinated and is it lead trained yet. If possible take them both out on leads so they are not in a confined area and there are other distractions.
