Attention/Frustration Barking

Any suggestions for a dog that is barking at owner- typical scenerios as follows:

1. Barking when stopped to chat to someone at the park
2. Barking when waiting for turn at Agility class
3. Barking in Vets waiting area

Motivation believed to be attention/ Frustration/ Boredom/ impatience?

Examples of Methods tried :

1. Distraction with food- works to a point but feel dog now anticipates food and "Bullys" for it by barking more?

2. Distraction with Sit/Down etc - Worked to a point but dog can still bark whilst doing these commands?

3. Distraction with toy- Not always interested, drops toy?

4. Tell "No" - works to a point but dog will soon start again, also difficult/ uncomfortable to do this in social situations?

5. Time out- putting out of room for 10-15 seconds works well but not always possible/practical to do.

6. Ignoring- as above difficult/ impractical to do in social situations? Have done some "Set ups", dog is very persistent, stops for a while but then starts again.

Which method/s is best to persevere with here and does anyone have any further advice for this issue?

Thanks.

My latest rehome used to bark continually when she saw other dogs approaching - she really wanted to run to them but she hadn't a recall and couldn't be let off. I used a gentle halti/collar combination on a double ended 2 metre line, and rewarded her for staying calm. It took a couple of weeks, but it did work. I still give her an occasional refresher if she starts to get the giddies. Headcollars do seem to have a calming effect on some dogs - others hate them!

I suspect there are other areas you can prove to the dog that you are the dominant party in the relationship. There are humane ways to do so by following a few rules, that will serve to remind your dog that you are top. It is little things, like making sure you are always first through door ways, you eat first. Get this organised and into the routine as a start.

Thanks for input on this... this dog is a tough nut!

Certain methods work well for particular situations, for example attention or excited barking within the home ignoring is great (if whole family stick to it!)

Most difficult are social situations, Like a toddler in a supermarket he takes advantage of this, knows owners are limited in their reactions/methods?
