Molly - 6 year old Basset in Aberystwyth

Molly is a 6 year old tan and white Basset Hound and is currently on foster in Aberystwyth in Wales.

The Molly Fact File

Dog status: Good
Cat status: Not to be rehomed with cats
Child status: Older children preferred.
House training: Perfect
Home alone: Not able to be left for long periods. No full time workers
Basic training: Basic training only and needs more input.

Basset Hounds are big dogs on short legs! With their exaggerated length of ears, wrinkly skins and droopy eyelids these dogs are easily recognised. They are heavy, long and low dogs with great strength and are not for the faint hearted. Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. They might howl or bark when they want something, or to suggest that they think something is wrong. They also use a low, murmuring whine to get attention, which sounds to many owners as though their Bassets are "talking" to them. This whine is also used by the hound to beg (for food or treats) and varies in volume depending on the nature of the individual hound and length of time it has been begging. They are scent hounds and can be hard to move when they have found something to smell and can follow a scent for miles becoming deaf to their owners. Even though Bassets sleep a lot, walks are still necessary.

Molly is a typical Basset hound as described above; she is very vocal and doesn’t like to be left at all and is very strong.

Molly was a home surrender who was surrendered with another male Basset who is also available for rehoming. Molly and Harvey can be rehomed together with Harvey or without. She is good with other dogs and is in foster with a Westie and plays nicely with her. She can be a little wary outside when dogs approaches but quickly settles and is happy to interact.

Molly is in foster with cats but cannot be rehomed with cats or small animals.

Molly is good with people and children but can be wary of new people and places and may initially bark. She could be rehomed with children over 10 years old as long as the household is not too busy. She would need someone in for most of the day.

Molly has some basic training and knows sit, stay and leave it and will walk nicely on a lead. However she is strong and can pull if she wants to get somewhere or there is a smell that needs investigating. Molly gets stressed when left and will bark and needs to have her crate covered and night so she doesn’t bark at noises outside.

Molly has shown no possessive or aggressive behaviour and is happy to be touched all over. She travels fine in a car and will settle after an initial settling in period and is fully housetrained.
When she arrived with Hope Rescue she was underweight and her claws were very overgrown. She also requires some dental work that will be carried out next week.

In summary, Molly would be happy as an only dog if she had a lot of attention from her owner but she could quite happily live with other dogs or be rehomed with Harvey. She is an active dog who is learning to enjoy longer walks but will need further training and a quiet household.

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. We have a suggested minimum donation of £160.
