I would also go for crate with amusing things to do in it bet you do the 40 min walk home in 30 anyway

Not sure about the previous comment about dogs having no concept of time? Whilst they cannot tell the time they do show an awareness of times of day etc...

The crate.......you know he will be safe and so will your bathroom.Make sure he is tired and give him a Kong and I am sure he will be fine/Leave the tv /radio on so that he can hear some noise too.

We left Shadow in the bathroom a couple of times when she was younger. One time she chewed through the outflow pipe from the loo, the next it was the hose to fill the cistern! You think the bathroom is free from things to chew, but he will find something!

Good luck!

I thought of you this morning and wondered how Spencer got on. Did you use the crate or bathroom? I hope all went well but do let us know.

I crated him in the end. Left him 2 Kongs with his breakfast and a bit of cheese melted in so the food didn't just fall out. Ended up being out 3 hours which I wasn't impressed about but he did fine. Still had some of his Kong left when I got home too.

I am glad it worked out for you, at least it makes the decision easier next time.
