Rescue dog nipping

Hello, I have reformed a rescue dog this weekend who has a lot of puppy behaviours. He is 18 months old and 30kg but he nips which is quite painful.

How can I stop him? I've tried yelling in pain but it does make any difference.

I've already got one rescue dog but she's never done this

It can be anywhere on the body, ears seem to be a favourite!

Hopefully the rescue can help, or at least put you in touch with a good trainer who uses positive methods to help your pup overcome this.
It's hard to say without seeing the behaviour, it could be play, it could be over excitement, it could be fear.
Please don't use any trainer that recommends shouting, hitting or anything physical. A good calm trainer who can see the behaviour and read it well is all that is needed.
Wishing you good luck.

Usually it's best to just ignore the puppy for nipping, especially if it's playful and to get your attention. Just turn your back and walk away or at least go stand somewhere else. If the nipping continues, leave the room. Since they have short attention spans, you can come back a minute or so later. Then just walk away again if he nips again.

I talked with a couple of trainers about this issue, but that is basically what they recommended. They also said to make sure the dog/pup has plenty of his own chew toys. Here is the post I'm referring to: http://www.dogids.com/blog/how-to-st...from-biting-2/

Good luck. I also think it's a good idea to reach out to the rescue for some ideas, and they may be able to put you in touch with the right trainer. It may not even cost you anything. Sometimes the rescue group will cover it or the trainer donates time for rescue groups.
