Lilac

I have been looking at getting one and I ended up buying a hybrid at the weekend instead. I couldn't find a traditional lilac, although I have seen many growing here and there in gardens all over the place

How would I take a cutting from an established Lilac? and what time of year? and are they slow or fast growers?
