head of tick left in..what to do..

Hi, ive just got back from a great 5 day agility show near the beach in great yarmouth but yoda picked up a tick today- on his eyebrow...somehow before i could spray it with frontline it was knocked off and has left the head inside.
Ive put some antiseptic on it but not really sure what to do...can it do any harm? is a visit to the vets in order?

thanks

Hi GSDM can you try to squeeze it out by pressing on each side?

If left in a Tic head they can form an abscess, you will need to get it out somehow then bathe the area with antiseptic . If you can't do it a trip to the vets may be called for...

Maybe put some vaseline over it so it can't hold on anymore.

Jeni it is just the head so there is nothing to hold on with . It should die quite quickly but will remain a foreign body ..yuk Tics are revolting!

Ahhh fair enough. I've never seen a tick before, so don't know what they're like, just got told if a dog gets a tick to put vaseline over it.

Woiuld bathing the head in strong salt water be any use then? Just to keep any infection at bay?

Never put anything on a tick to suffocate it. It makes the tick regurgitate the blood in its system pushing contaminated blood back into the dog. If you dont have a tick remover or some tweezers get some cotton loop it over the tick slowly tighten the loop and then pull upwards, ticks are pretty strong! This method normally removes all of the tick.

hi,
i've heard that if you leave the head in, it causes really bad infections and can make your little baby (dog) really sick. i used to use a warm a cotton wool pad with warm water before attempting to remove anything, as the warmth opens the pores. so it comes out alot easier.
hope this helps and good luck
