Far as im aware Vicki-i think most liquid and diluted weedkillers have to be safe around pets now once they have allowed them to dry,but best check reverse of container first.What kind of area are you wanting free of weeds???

If your spotweeding like in a patio-try using 'Roundup' cause this is a systematic weedkiller and the plant takes it down to the roots-killing it entirely.Bruise the foliage first by stamping with your feet cause then it makes it easier for the weed to absorb the chemical.Roundup is safe with pets once dry and is possibly the greenest option cause its inert when in the soil.

For larger areas-something like 'Weedol' is good and offers upto 6 months weed free protection afterwards.

It's for spot weeding Steve, so Roundup sounds like the one to go for, I'll do it before I go to work, as the dogs are indoors then until lunchtime. Thanks honey xox

The safest weedkiller to dogs is dog/bitch urine.

Roundup is not as safe as the manufacturer makes out.

{Will see if I can find the references later}

If it's any help Vicki we use Roundup and as you know it's a bit like Noah's ark here we have just about every animal. Obviously we use sensible precautions like only spraying on a still day, keeping all animals off until completely dry and so on. We also used it on my Dad's farm without any problems. I not sure that there are any weedkillers that are completely safe but following guidelines strictly obviously diminishes any risk.

The half-life of glyphosate in soils ranges from 1 to 174 days with a typical time of 47 days. Microbes breakdown glyphosate in the environment. It takes at least 5 half-lives for it to disappear from treated soils. The sandier the soil, the longer it takes to breakdown.

Note: Roundup contains a surfactant (detergent-type substance) which enhances the effects of glyphosate.

This is not as daft an idea as some might think! Especially when it comes to dealing with these pesky "horse tail" things, which are immune to just about everything else! I used to burn those b*gg*rs out with a gas blowlamp!
