As hard as it is I would try to stay away for a few months.

You've said exactly what I was thinking. But couldn't think how to put it so it didn't sound unfeeling. Just thinking how my little dog goes absolutely BANANAS when she sees my daughter (even if she hasn't seen her for 6 months) and how she mopes about when she goes again - I thought it would cause the dog more anxiety.
