Doggy smell and skin infections

Hello all, I have a 6 month old male douge de bordeaux about 4 weeks ago I noticed some little red spots under his belly and around his bits ... At the time I didn't think anything of it I just thought it was the dogs equivalent of human puberty spots so I took no notice of them but then they started getting really big and aggravated looking they also spread to under his arm pits and a few on his face so obviously I took him to the vets and she told me he had a skin infection and gave me some antibiotics the spots have cleared up nicely (although some areas of skin are looking a bit dry) but digga does smell really strong of that doggy smell and I just wondered if it could be due to this infection ... He has got to go back vets on Friday for a checkup but I just wondered if anyone could shed any light on this and anything I can do to try and get rid of the smell because allot of people have commented on his strong doggy smell anyway thanks for reading

Could it be his diet? Have you changed what he's fed lately? My previous dogs got very musty smelling and a greasy but dull coat on Burns - despite it being a decent quality food, it just didn't suit them at all.

The smell will be the infection. My dog had a really bad skin infection and the smell was terrible and he had baths 3times a week and still stank. My vet also confirmed the smell was from the infection. The infection has cleared up now and the smell has slowly disappeared.

Could be a side effect of the antibiotics.
AB's kill the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria and this can cause a yeast overgrowth in the digestive tract.
This then gets into the bloodstream and will give off a toxic smell.
A possibility.

thanks very much for the replies hopefully the smell should start going soon but i will mention it to the vet when we go back - also digga has got a big spot on the side of his face (not like the skin infection ones) this one is about the size of a 1p it is hard and weeps a clear liquid it also bleeds ...the vet also looked at this and said it was quite normal in puppys and should go on its own but i just seems to be getting bigger do you think its normal? heres a photo

these photo's dont make it look as bad as it is

No, it's not normal. He needs to go back to the vets. He looks like he has inflammation on his muzzle from the pics?

Agree with above, needs to see vet again about it. Possibly another course of antibiotics or different course of antibiotics. Would say infection hasn't totally cleared

If you have your puppy insured you can ask for a referral to a skin specialist

I wouldn't call that normal or a spot as it looks quite raised.
From the photo's it looks like a type of tumor or cyst.
digga may have scuffed of the surface with his paw.
If it is a quickly developing growth it needs removing before it gets too large.
Good luck and I do hope I am wrong.

I couldn’t provide a more detailed response last night as I was using my phone to browse the forum.

It may be worthwhile asking your vet to do skin scrapings to see exactly what is going on with your dog’s skin. From the pics provided it looks very similar from what my dog has. Coles (my dog) has demodex mites (a form of non-contiguous mange) and the skin looks a lot like how Cole’s skin started. His face and muzzle also look inflamed (another symptom of demodex mites). I’m not saying he definitely has this, it could still be a skin infection. With skin scrapings, they will be able to tell you what is on the dog’s skin and treat with the best treatment.

Coles was on antibiotics for six weeks for his skin infection and his skin was getting worse, so I had skin scrapings done. It turned out the antibiotics we were using for the skin infection were resistant to the bacterial skin infection he had. I also found out he had demodex mites. So it is worthwhile doing to ensure your dog is receiving the correct treatment.

Have a look at the pic attached. The skin on your dogs face looks similar to my dogs skin with regards to the red patches of inflammation, albeit not as severe.

I hope this helps and please keep us updated on his progress.
