Alternatives to Hills J/D dog food?

Hello, I have a 1 year old Lab (Bear), he was just diagnosed with serious hip problems. (he has barely any hip socket so playing or falling down dislocates his hips) He has to have surgery to help with the pain and will most likely have arthritis for the rest of his life.
Our vet recommended Hills J/D but I hesitate to feed it to him because the first 5 ingrediants include corn, and chicken by product meal.... I have done enough research on dog foods to know that dogs don't process corn well and that chicken by product isn't meat its all the throw away parts that no one wants. I have him on a good food now that is lamb and rice, but the vet insisted that he needs to be on Hills J/D because it will help with his pain and arthritis.
I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas for alternatives because I want him to have quality food but also have whatever benefits that hills has to offer.

Thanks for any input,

~EaJean

Corn isnt so bad, although it can be a problem if the dog is prone to allergies.

My Uncle was a vet, and although at first he was sceptical of Hills food, he swore by it after seeing the benefits. He wasnt on commission from Hills either before you all ask. Hills have put a lot of money into scientific research for their specialised diets. But if you want to continue with his present diet, or even make your own organic food, just make sure you have it properly balanced, and add a supplement like glucosamine and see how the dog goes on. You dont have to take your vets advice.

I think any premium food would be fine if you supplemented additionally, there are lots of supplements that help with HD - the usual glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, then others like devi's claw (natural anti-inflammatory), rosehip, green lipped mussel, omega 3 & 6 oils, vitamin C etc - if you google "supplements for hip dysplasia in dogs" there is loads of info.

Apologies if this is OT, but could I ask why your uncle wasn't on commission from Hills. That sounds rather strange?

My dog has hip displaysia in both hips - she has Hills R/D food in an attempt to keep her weight down so as not to put additional pressure on her joints. She also takes Rivotril (pain killer and anti inflammatory) and Seraquin (Glusomate). She also goes for hydrotherapy and this really improves and strengthens her hips
