Newbie

Hi all,

I am like totally new here, and am not sure how to get around, I have 3 x pups. 2 x Miniature Dachshunds and a new 10 week old Alsatian/Husky cross, the later is a fairly new breed where I come from (South Africa) and would like to know more about the breed and its habits.

Welcome to Dogsey!! Good luck with your dog ... you will need it! I have always had for the past 20 years low % wolf crosses .. the first one, Hal, was a mix of alaskan malamute, husky and wolf and was an absolute git!! Be prepared is my advice .. the following is a list of what to expect:

An inveterate digger
Supreme sense of smell
Separation anxiety
High prey drive
Strong pack loyalty
May or may not be able to train a reliable recall
Likely need for raw food diet, northern breeds tend to do badly on kibble
A howler
Furniture sleeper!
Sheds fluff constantly if heavy coated
No good as a guard dog
Heart stealer!!

Prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime. Your little guy will be nothing like any non-northern breed you have ever known!!

Hi Gnasher,

Thanks and much appreciated, but I originally got the pup to help protect me. It is early days still an at 10 week one cant tell if he is gong to be any good at all. Maybe by his big body build even if he is not to be a protective force to me, then maybe the build will scare the baddies away.

I have been doing internet searches and most website condoning to the Shepsky have said he will make an excellent guard dog, serve in the military and police.
