My last phone was a contract, which I didn't renew (Vodafone changed it ), so I put in a new SIM card. When I wanted to update, I just got a SIM-free phone and moved the SIM card to it. Result: PAYG phone, new model. On the whole, I think contract mobiles are a bad idea (at least for the private individual), as they are too bl@@dy expensive - remember, you're paying "line rental" as well as the inflated call charges!
