Poli

Poli is an two-year-old, female crossbreed, who came to The Mayhew on a recent rescue run. Sadly, she has never been taken for a walk and is severely lacking in confidence as a result of an almost complete lack of socialization. She is only now starting to get used to a lead and collar. She has also had no training, but is extremely intelligent and is picking up new commands very quickly. She is very nervous of anything or anybody new and will try to hide, but becomes very affectionate once she knows you, owing to her nervousness, we would prefer to home her with an all adult family only. She is good with other dogs but does tend to be a bit bossy towards them. We do not know if she is toilet trained or ok to be left alone.

Poli is a lively, smart young dog with lots of energy and a strong desire to learn. She will need at least one to two hours of off-lead exercise every day, initially wearing a 100ft long line until her confidence has been built up. She will need to go to training classes, which she will love, and she would excel at agility or obedience trails. She loves to learn new things, so her new guardian should be willing to teach her new tricks and give her jobs to do to keep her keen brain stimulated. Before arriving at the Mayhew it seems she had never been given toys to play with, she is only now starting to learn about games, quickly realising how much fun there is to be had. Her new guardians will be taking on a twelve-year commitment, which must not be taken lightly.

Poli is looking for a loving forever home with an active guardian who will keep her physically and mentally stimulated, and will devote time and patience to building up her confidence and making up for the early socialization she has missed out on.

Have you considered offering her to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People?

She'd be too timid

They do work wonders with their socialisation programme, might be worth giving them a ring. I know they have taken on some nervy dogs who have come on to be fully fledged Hearing Dogs.

We work closely with Hearing Dogs and have had some wonderful successes, however they only really take the perfect, easy to home dogs.
