Anti-Raw Vet

I`ve just had a lecture from a young vet about how I mustn`t feed my dog bones. Any bones. Even raw chicken bones. When I voiced my disbelief she got a bit shirty and said she`d just end up operating on my dogs to remove splintered bones. Even soft bones? I queried...oh yes, she said. So I smiled and nodded and wondered what world she lives in.
It makes you wonder how the animal population has survived without tinned food, doesn`t it?

It is suprising how many vets are ill educated on the RAW diet or on feeding non cooked bones to dogs.

PLaying devils advocate here though..are they uneducated after 5 years intense university study and practice...then the specialising they have to do after that 5 years, or have they experience of pulling bits of bone out of dog's stomachs?

I fed my boy raw for the better part of a year. I regret mentioning it to vet, as he practically implied that I was a terrible pet owner and that I was putting him at serious risk. He naturally, of course, suggested I try Science Diet.

I don't feed raw any more, but unless I used a holistic vet, I honestly wouldn't mention it. It isn't worth the aggravation.

Our vets are certainly not anti - but they are very wary.

I am very wary knowing too many dog who have had to have emergancy ops. It could well have been due to the owners doing it wrong - but as my dogs are fit and healthy as they are I just don;t wanna risk it.

As far as I am aware, vets don't study much in the form of nutrition. The degree I am doing currently can be used as a pre-vet degree, and although we have done a semester long module on nutrition, it was more on the componants of food (looking at fat, proteins, etc., in depth) than actual feeding of specific animals.

Dogs have been eating raw animals since they was wolves. Even before someone invented vets. It`s a bit like saying grass isn`t good for sheep.
