There are some simple text and graphics tasks my wife and I still fire up the ye olde Power Mac to do. I would love to find a Mac work alike to use on this Linux box to use in place of the Word work alike Open Office. There are certain tasks I can do in ClarisWorks so much easier.

Note, I have very few Intel or Microsoft products.

What distros? Our house is mainly Mepis but I recently got a little box to play about with PCLinuxOS (Gnome) on.

My SIL just upgraded my Debian over Memorial Day weekend. I had used Mandrake for a number of years. After I put this system together early last year, I tried Kubuntu and had problems. I finally decided my SIL would be more help if I ran the same Debian as he did. I am a convert, almost a fan boy.

We took my computer to his office on the campus of one of the Linux mirror sites. Very fast download.

This seems to be turning into a *nix thread, not just a Mac one...

BTW, I just did a quick google. There are loads of pages that show you how to make your Linux install look like OS X. Some of them look really convincing!

I love linux, it just doesn't love me!

Whenever I've tried it I've had driver problems, first it was the wifi card, then it was the graphics card! I just gave up - I want an easy life, hence getting a mac

Two of the potentially trickiest issues...

Having said that, I've never had an issue with wireless. My current messing about box has a USB dongle which was detected & worked first time with both Mepis and PCLinuxOS. PCLOS on my play box has a pretty impressive Control Center which seemed to configure the Intel graphics automagically. My main box running Mepis has got onboard Nvidia graphics which I used a script called smxi to set up. It's pretty nifty, but only works with Debian and it's very close relatives. Not 'buntu!
