He then did a whole room, which is quite small for £440, again 2 coats, even though it was already plastered but rather badly (by Dave! ). I still have artex out in my boot room which we will eventually get rid of, and he told me the best way of getting it off was to soak it really well and then it scraped off easily?? Haven't tried it yet though! What about plasterboarding the ceiling with the artex (like we had to do over ours) and maybe a plasterer would do a skim coat over the plasterboard? All I know is, a good plasterer would not skim over existing artex, they will want it plasterboarded over, and quite honestly it's much easier that way than trying to get the darn stuff off!

my Brother in law ( sittng here now ) 30 years plasterer of own company and never been short or out of work says a good plaster can skim over artex it may take 3 coats ....he says a greedy plasterer will say he can't so he can squezze more cash out of you
he also said £840 jobs are lovely .......we had a quote 4 months ago from someone else as BIL was booked up this was to skim hall stairs and landing 2 skims ( artex quite thick ) £200 max

he recommends not taking artex off unless you want to live on oxygen for the rest of ya life

Oh dear! I have got her worried.

I told her about the asbestos, firstly she dosn't know what it is. and she txt the lad that will be doing the work and he had never heard of artex having asbestos in it - he's only done it for 6 years, well after ther change over. She says well if he thinks it is ok then just let him get on with it I have told her that it could be dangerous but she doesn't seem to be taking in the danger to him and the both of them two.

I hope she does a bit more fishing before he starts work on it and she see's sense.

When I told her that asbestos is everywhere, she says they wouldn't use it if it was that dangerous,

Oh god, just pleased that they have a while before they move in, maybe I can change there minds.

I think they're nuts but If they are intent on taking it off a wallpaper steamer will do the job without half the mess just tell them to make sure not to hold it in one place too long and try it somewhere small and least likely to be noticable first. They only cost about £30 to buy in argos or wherever.

I think it is just the initial shock of finding out hopefully. Anyway would the surveyer not be able to advise them when the get that done, as they are having a full survey done?

To be honest if they can afford it they need a proper lasterer in as stated. If not how about this?

Depends how good/confident they are at diy.

Hi Becky,

I have told them about this stuff, but it appears that they were at first going to do the sanding themselves, but I don't know then get a plasterer in to skim the ceilings. The plastering part of the work is ok and in hand, it is just this blooming sanding that is worrying me. If they do get someone in to do the sanding I quite frankly couldn't care less about them, it is my carer and her fiance that I am worried about, I know the risk MAY be small but I don't want them to have an early death. (I know that I'm going overboard a bit but I do worry)

They are young and inexperienced if you know what I mean, and what is making it more poignant (sp) is that my dad used to work in a factory producing asbestos sheets etc and he died of lung cancer. due to working with the stuff.

I feel like giving her a shake and saying "For god's sake don't take a chance on it" I wish I could physically stop them, at least until they know if it is safe or not.

Does anyone know how much the test costs? I can tell her on Monday when she comes in.

I think it's a case of you get what you pay for Lisa? I had 2 other plasters doing ceilings downstairs where they put their feet through doing the loft and quite honestly I wouldn't have let them back in my house the mess they left behind them!!! This guy did all of the new upstairs, it's smoother than my legs when I've waxed them and you could see your face in it, all the coves and angles were superb, and on top of that you didn't know he was here, not a speck of white dust anywhere, so that's why we had him to do the downstairs when we finally got round to it. Better the devil you know I say having had the experience of 3 of them. Yes, the others were a lot cheaper, but a lot messier and the work wasn't half as good. Same as everything else I suppose, some good some bad. Plasterers are like plumbers in my neck of the woods, you just can't get one. I had to book this chap 3 months in advance!!! 3 months!!!! Well worth the wait imo.

Sometimes Helen, older ceilings have been painted in distemper which basically makes anything else you put on it drop off.Perhaps your ceiling had this at some point?
