Scooting problem

My 10 year old Beagle has developed a scooting problem. Has anyone tried Preparation H or Nupercainal for this?

i would of thought the anal glands were the problem(or an itchy butt)....usually helped by expressing them and altering the diet if nes.....what are the above things u mention?

I checked and it's not worms so I guess I will have to take him to the vet for possible anal gland problem. Has anyone tried Preparation H or Nupercainal?

They are ointments that work on humans for itchy bottom.

They are remedies for piles (cannot spell the H word) and totally inappropriate for dogs.

Poppy scoots when her anal glands are full and I take her to the vets to have them emptied - usually 12 - 14 weeks. But she also scoots if she's a bit constipated, it seems to help her go. Luckily she doesn't do this on the carpet, she asks to go out and scoots along the patio.

DO NOT use human medication intended for piles, full anal glands are not the same as piles, and also the dog could ingest the medication when cleaning themselves.

Many groomers will also express anal glands for you - which is cheaper than booking a vets appt. Where my vet charges £17 (not sure if it would be plus the £30 consult), the groomers only charge £8.

My bitch also has to get hers emptied from time to time. People have suggested I feed some bones to firm the stools up a little more (when they toilet, they should empty a little bit of the anal glands, if the stools are not firm enough they will not empty as easily - raw bones can have a poop firming effect) - I just haven't built up the nerve yet!
