sspca now only home problem dogs to breed rescues

I got a letter today from the SSPCA to regards to a bitch that I had written to them about apparently their latest policy is to only contact breed rescues about a dog if it is a problem to them, they say that people looking for a dog like to see a variety of breeds pedigree and mongrels what are they a sweetie shop they have kept all breed rescue no,s but in the future will only contact them if they find they cannot get rid MY GOD I ask you so rescues now have to take on all the problem dogs !!11 surely this is not right these people are funded small rescues are not

I think youll have to go down there and make your face know to them Lorraine, i know for a fact they work very closely with GAL and a couple of others, who are in weekly contact with them.
i think this might be your best course of action.
It does seem a bit odd for them to say they like a range of breeds etc? most general dog rescues take in needy dogs whatever their shape size colour breed etc.
I think the SSPCA being such a large charity, they have to run their kennels in a very businesslike manner, which includes trying to appeal to the public in whatever ways they can.

I understand what your saying cbt but the letter is quite clear it,s from their projects officer natasha edwards that if they have a dog in that they can re-home they will do it her letter says that if it is deemed necessary to seek specialist help with a breed and find they have aproblem this is when they will involve breed rescues seems odd but there you go maybe they feel if they can re-home without taking funds from small rescues it is better maybe I should just look at it from this angle

I really dont know how they work they have said in their letter that backgrounds of the dogs where possible are given by the previous owners but I know that most times you are never told the truth incase you won.t take the dog they are then happy to re-home on these points they have said that if anyone has aproblem that they can return the dog or ask for help so I suppose thats something

I think breed rescue is a better place for a problem dog in one way as the breed will be known and homes properly vetted etc

but I can see your point re; them being self funded and ending up with problem dogs

With the money they and the RSPCA have you would think they could afford a proper trainer etc - oops silly me ! that would eat into their profits wouldnt it

Okay for all the slagging off I would just like to say that at the end of the day the SSPCA for all their faults often do a terrific job for many of the animals that come through teir doors.

I have in the past had some words with them and have been disappointed in the way they have handled certain situations, like when they had a pitbull in their kennels (whole different story) but the main thing is they are a WELFARE organisation. Like their practices or not they rescue tens of thousands of dogs a year and place them in new homes and for that I have the utmost respect.

Like CBT said perhaps their practices are not to everybody's tastes but they are out there doing something and they are making a difference!

I think the people that work at the shelters etc are doing a great job Laura ( I homecheck for them too and the girls are great at my local centre ) but some of the bigwigs do not always have the dogs welfare first and foremost to be honest. Like when they spend millions on new headquarters? Why? Couldnt that be spent on the dogs instead?
Plus there are rumours that some RSPCA shelters put animals down ? Is this true? Do they have a no destruction policy ?

I agree with Laura, they rehome thousands of dogs every year!
theyre not perfect and have their faults like anyone else, but if it werent for them, small rescues in scotland would be even more under pressure than they are right now.
I dont agree with all the slagging of breeders and rescues which has been going on lately, especially when people get named, I think its better to take it up with them personally.
