Heel work with a small dog

So i am now working with Coco on lead free heel work ,its going really well but she likes to jump up as we go ,i started out with a treat in my hand and now its just a empty cupped hand ..
How would you go about correcting the jumping while praising the fact she's walking perfect to heel ...

I hope this makes sense///

I would just make your requirements stricter, so if she has the general idea of position, now concentrate on heel without the jumping up. 300 peck method, perhaps, so 1 step, reward, 1, 2, reward, 1, 2 - she jumps up, ignore, start over, 1, reward, 1, 2 reward, etc?

suggests similar to above but also mentions a good idea - instead of holding treats in your hand, put something wet on the end of a wooden spoon, e.g. peanut butter, and letting the dog have a lick of the spoon as its reward

Ty krlyr...

I think i will have to start going down to her level when we stop too, its very easy to just bend down and meet her half way ...

Why not use squeezy cheese.. primula or putting it on a wooden spoon - that way you don't do your back in and she still gets the reward without jumping.

There are various options.

Obviously you should get away from the luring with primula or target stick asap.

You can make sure food is dropped on the floor but that depends on whether the dog tries to catch it or not, if she does when jumping then not good idea.

You should be reinforcing DURING heelwork not at the halt otherwise you are reinforcing the halt.

However, remember, heel is a position not a movement.

Now is that confusing enough for you?

Well as Kamal and Mary demo with their titchy dogs, it should be no different than training large dogs.

primula cheese spread in a tube.
The reward is then down low so no point jumping. Squeeze a little from the tube when the dog is in the right position.
