Rabies vaccination

Hi,

I had Cox vaccinated against rabies today, with a view to taking him abroad in the summer for a holiday. I was surprised (and delighted) when the vet said that the vaccine lasts for 3 years and I don't have to redo it again until 5/12/11. He can safely re-enter the UK until that date too, provided all the other requirements are fulfilled at all.

Has anyone else heard of this 3 year vaccine?

I hate pumping unnecessary chemicals into my dog, and therefore it is great that I only need to give him 1 rabies jab every 3 years.

Is your vet providing the necessary stamp or letter or whatever to say that the jab has been successful. (This was discussed on your other thread a few weeks back)

You will have to have the blood test done 4 weeks after the jab has been given and it has a positive result back other wise you won't get your dog back in England after your holiday!!!!!

How long does that take? My vet here says that takes 6 months - they basically sit on the blood sample for 6 months.

Is this true? and if so, why would that be?

OMG I'd sure like to see someone answer that. If they take 6 months to do the blood analysis in UK I'll have to allow at least 10 months here

It doesn't take 6 months to do a sample!
Six months is the elapsed time required by DEFRA to test the antibody status for sufficient levels to have developed. Some vaccines do not 'take' and they need to assess if it has before dogs are allowed back in to UK.

LOL - no I know it doesn't take 6 months to do the actual sample!

But is it 6 months before you get the letter saying your dog can come back into the country?

More or less...repeat bloods can be done before then, and then your passport can be issued but re-entry to UK must allow for 6 months and 1 day to have elapsed.

Other countries are different.
