Puppy and working full time

okay so i know im opening a can of worms here so here goes...

well as some of you know we have a new pup, we chose now due to my fella not being in work at the moment and not looking like he would be for a while. but now a job has come up. now we have a dilema a new pup with us both working full time. he is going to request nights so the pup wont be alone so much. weekends i work but he will only be alone for a couple of hours at a time. his mum said she can pop in during the week at lunch time to let the out. mine will be fine left for so long and the pup will have them for company although caged separatly until he is a bit bigger.

i know house training will be harder.

but can it be done both working full time with a puppy??

If your mum is able to come let him out and if you are crate training him, I dont see why not. Depends how old he is? And if he is exercised early in the morning and at night, maybe your mum could take him out?

Would you OH be able to take him to work or you be able to take him? Some work places allow dogs to come with their owners. Although I think it should be said for all companies except obviously food and clothes (but thats a different topic)

Six weeks old? Surely this puppy should still be with it's mother?? It's certainly too young to be left on his own for several hours a day.

I'm afraid you're not going to like my advice on this, and I hope you don't take offence, but I honestly think the best thing to do is to phone the breeder, explain the change of circumstances, and ask her/him to take the puppy back while it's still young enough to be rehomed easily. It might be painful for YOU but it would be the best thing for the pup.

The only other alternative I can see is to find/hire a puppy-sitter/dog-walker - but you'll need to do your homework and make sure whoever you choose is experienced and trustworthy - and that you can afford their fee, of course.

You didn't know this would happen, its not 'your fault' - life has a habit of springing surprises on us, and we just have to bite the bullet and deal with things. All I can say is to listen to your gut feeling on this. If you're having doubts about whether you are still able to offer the right home for this puppy, then I think you already know the answer.

((((hugs))))) to you, whatever your decision is, it's going to be tough to make it.

I think he is too young to have left his mother and i would be wanting to know why they let him! But that said we have just taken a puppy who we got at 9 1/2 weeks and i think it will be very hard when you are not around to spend the time socialising the puppy fully with other people and dogs and to spend the time with them just learning to be around the home and how they should behave and fit in, not just be left in a crate.

I would seriously think he needs to be around people and having people come in for a large part of the days until he can go out and about, which you will find hard to do without help.

Can he be crated in your car once injections are up to date, so that at least you could walk/get him out and interact between home visits.

I know our puppy has needed a lot of attention and our friend who has an 8month old pup who did not get much attention is now struggling with him.

Whatever you decide to do i wish you all the best, cos it is wonderful having our little pup around.

I guess as the breeder is letting the pup go so early they probably wouldn't be up for hanging onto him a bit longer? If they could take him until he's had his jabs you'd have more options regarding people taking care of him.

Try your local training clubs, maybe someone there would help out? A dog walker probably wouldn't take him so early but maybe you can find someone who stays at home who might want company? I would have loved a second puppy for Toby to play with when he was small! Shame I'm not closer, although I think Toby would be too bouncy now for such a little pup.

I was lucky, my boss was happy for me to take Toby to work and I could go out with him whenever I needed to.
