Yes you've got it the right way around Mo Unilateral cryptorchids occur more often than bilateral, and the retained testicle is usually the one on the dog's right side.

The testicles are still within the abdomen and slowly descend into the scrotum within 10 days. You should be able to 'feel' them from 6 to 10 weeks, if not, there's only a small chance they'll descend. As pointed out in an earlier post though..be careful as they are soft and can move between the scrotum and inguinal canal. The inguinal rings close at about 6 months. At that time, a dog with one descended testicle is termed a unilateral cryptorchid, and with no descended testicles a bilateral cryptorchid. Monorchid refers to the very rare case of a dog that only develops one testicle, although it's often misused to mean a dog with one undescended testicle.

My 6 Mths Old Maltese "kemo" Has Shown No Sign Of His "testes" Dropping, Our Vet Suggested Castration But Said The 'op' Would Be More Expensive As "they" Have To Be Found. I Am Not Worried 'bout The Cost I'm More Concerned With "kemos" Health. I'm Not Intending To Breed With Him But How Long Can I Safely Let Nature Take It's Course As He Is Extremely Small And I'm Worried 'bout A Large Operation At This Young Age? Saxee1

It is also known that male wolves in the wild can have undescended testicles up till they are 3 years old & be entire & go on to produce pups there on after.
It can depend on the breed I suspect as well.

Lupi is 8 months old and only has one descended. I'd always intended him to be neutered as we don't want to breed him and want to avoid any 'accidents', he's not the type of dog I'd like to see mixed with another breed.

I know the op is far more invasive which worries me, so I'm leaving it a bit longer, just incase the second one appears, or hopefully is nearer the 'surface' to minimise the search.

On fees, I nearly passed out when they told me how much it would cost. However, some insurers will cover that if only one has descended. The dog is at more risk of cancer with the retained one and breeding from one would not be a good thing as it can then pass along down the line.
