Not going to do chicken bones

I'm going to stick to crushed and bonemeal. We got a huge bone from the butchers yesterday, which Loki loved, but somehow he managed to gnaw off a piece of it. We found out this morning when he threw it up, so no harm done - it was round and smooth and not too small and I am going to carry on with the big meaty bones once a week. But it frightened me as I thought if it were small and sharp it might have damaged him coming up or going down

So no bones chicken wings - I couldn't cope with the stress.

Thanks everyone for your advice though. I might change my mind in future but for now we'll carry on as we are.

One thing - people need educating about cooked bones. Our neighbour kindly offered to let Loki have the bones from their dinner and I had to carefully tell him not cooked.

Hi Lucky Star,

I don't have Lola on a raw diet but do occasionally let here have some raw stuff. At first I was worried about chicken wings but what I did which put my mind at ease, well a bit anyway. Get a knife and cut through the bones in the chicken wing. You will see that you are able to cut through them without splintering and they are more like gristle / cartilage. Not sure if that makes sense, it’s been a long day

I think it depends on why you are feeding chicken bones. If it is just for the calcium etc. then you are just as well to feel ground up frames or chopped necks & wings. You get the nutrition without the worry

If you are feeding for tooth-cleaning and jaw exercise then a good, big, meaty marrow bone will serve. Cut off and discard any smallish, 'wobbly', bits attached by cartilage that can be gnawed off and swallowed whole.

Never leave your dog unsupervised with any type of bone.

Thanks SB - excellent advice as usual.
