Min Pin mix and possible puppy

Hello all,

My parents want to get a puppy. They already have a 10 yr old Min Pin/Maltese mix who thinks she rules the roost. (Well she knows she rules the roost.) Anyway, my concern is she will not get along with the puppy. My mom has already said they wouldn't be able to get a puppy if the resident dog won't allow it. Is there anything that can be done to get the dog to accept a puppy or should the idea be disregarded? Thank you.

Why do you think she won't accept it, what's she like with other dogs in or out of the home?

I mean, she is ok with my dog who has been around her since he was a puppy but he goes home. We aren't sure how she will be with another live in dog. She can have an attitude. Out of the home it is really hit or miss. All the dogs that come to her home don't also live there. Maybe she will be fine...

Well as long as they manage the time the two interact it should be fine, she accepts others short term so just make sure the pup doesn't harass the life out of her and has a safe place such as a crate or play pen and let them get used to each other gradually.

That is what we were thinking. Would you recommend bringing the older dog along to meet the puppy first? Thanks!

Will the breeder allow you to do that?
I've always just brought the pup home, introduced them and kept a watchful eye on them.

Ok. I will mention it to my mom. They were thinking of getting the puppy from the shelter and I think around here they highly recommend the resident dog to go and do a meet and greet first. Thanks for your recommendations!

I'm sure a shelter will be more tolerant than a breeder to your older dog meeting the pup, yeah go for it and see what happens.

Introduce the dogs on neutral turf - in a park somewhere and keep both dogs on leash. If they don't get along on neutral grounds, then it's likely the pin won't accept the dog on it's own turf.

Make sure to give them time, if they get along good - then bring the pin home - give the pin time to settle in. Leash both dogs, then bring the pup in.
