I've been a regular at exemption/companion shows for 20 years now. In more recent years I've been a judge and organiser too. In my busiest year with my keenest dog, we attended 57 shows in 12 months, much to his delight.

With various dogs at these shows I've competed in conformation, crossbreed, novelties, handling classes, obedience, agility, scurry and even the odd gundog event (though my sighthounds are not very good at this  ).

It's a great way of meeting doggy people, socialising dogs, and generally having fun, as well as learning a whole host of dog handling skills. Unlike at open/champ shows, experienced handlers at companion shows often have time to hand out advice to newcomers, making it a great way for newer dog people to make contact with experienced ones and pick their brains.

Well worth the effort.

After reading your article on companion dog shows I entered my neutered 2yr old sibe in a companion dog show at the mgf show and bless him he got a 2nd, both he and myself had a very enjoyable and fun day, I shall definately do it again!!!

I fully agree with you on this and having been an organiser of several companion shows (lots of hours spent planning, getting sponsorship for classes, trophies and rosettes to name but a few things) and attending them, it's definitely not ONLY a companion show. Thanks for raising this important issue.

:001: Great article! I think people do tend to forget the ammount of hard work that goes into running events like these.
