Dog Behavior Question

Hello All,

One of my Blue Heelers has an obsession with circling and pounding his front legs on the dirt in my back yard like he's stomping ants but there are no bugs. He can do this for hours. He loves to chase dirt kicked up by wind or kicked up by his running around. I posted a video on YouTube of him doing it:

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Beautiful dog! He is displaying natural behaviour of canids searching for small mammals and insects - the pouncing behaviour is used to flush small rodents out of the long grass. Foxes do this as well.

Can I ask, does he do it only on sunny days?

Thank you so much for your replies. We thought he just has an obsession with dirt but what you said makes sense. I live in Las Vegas so we don't get many days that aren't sunny. I haven't really paid much attention if he does it when we do get those occasional days that are overcast. You can tell by the video how excited he gets doing it. I would say it comes in a close 2nd to retrieving balls I hit around the back yard with a tennis racket. Thank you again!

I expect at some time when he has done it you have laughed and this makes him happy so he continues doing it. Dogs like laughter.
