Woody – 16 year old male Yorkshire Terrier(look at this Oap)

Woody – 16 year old male Yorkshire Terrier
Woody’s owners emigrated and felt he would not cope with such an upheaval so asked us to rehome him. When we took him in, we understood him to be 10 years of age but we have recently discovered he is in fact 16 – or around 115 in human years! He is 9″ tall at the shoulder and 12″ from the back of his neck to his tail. Woody has limited vision and hearing but like all dogs, relies on his sense of smell and copes very well. He derives a great deal of comfort from knowing a person is nearby. He will potter about in your wake if you leave the room and will cry for you (actually he barks like a baby sea lion) if he can’t get to you. If you need to go out it’s best to wait until he’s taking a nap unless of course you take him with you -he is very good on the bus and in the car. He prefers to sleep next to the bed on the floor at night and actively prefers a fairly hard floor rather than a dog bed. He will always toilet outside provided you take him there regularly but if you forget, he has a tendency to use the floor. Being an elderly gent, he drinks and urinates fairly frequently. He eats well, adores added luxuries such as cooked chicken and sausage and enjoys being groomed. He prefers mooching around a garden to going on long walks.

Woody has a slight narrowing of his trachea, not uncommon in Yorkies. He needs no medication for it and it is managed simply by not tiring him out nor putting him situations where he becomes overly stressed or excited. He had several teeth removed 6 months ago but this does not affect his eating in any way. He has good mobility for his age, though he is very slightly wobbly and will stumble on steps occasionally. Realistically would need to be carried up the stairs to bed....

Even though Woody doesn’t seek out other dogs for play or companionship any more, he is exceptionally tolerant of them and will simply back away gently if he feels threatened. He seems to get along with anyone and anything and doesn’t mind being picked up and cuddled. We have tried to cat test him but he didn’t seem at all aware the cat was there! I genuinely don’t feel any cat would be remotely troubled by him. There was no reaction to our chickens either.

The kind of home we are looking for is one where Woody can see out his days in calm and comfort. It is important that your expectations of him are not too high: given his restricted vision and hearing, you won’t get as much from him as you would from a younger model! He will appreciate a simple but regular routine, including practical steps such as having his bowls consistently in the same place. Above all, Woody just wants to be loved and cherished by a special person in his old age.
