I've had a few rescue GSDs Abbie being the last one. never had any problems with behaviour or fitting in with the other dogs either.

As you can see above Rjj had no fear of dive bombing Abbie !!

When placing rescue GSDs(& any rescue dog come to that)where there are other dogs, it's essential to ensure that the GSD actually likes other dogs & especially the ones in it's possible new home.

Specialist rescues are 99% of the time better than the all breed rescues at assessing dogs suitability for rehoming

Nicola - I think your best bet would be to give Liz a call (hers is the number on the website) and explain your circumstances and see if she would consider you for a homecheck. Given your grandfather's age, it may be a no, as usually GSDR Scotland doesn't rehome to anyone over the age of 70 years, except for in exceptional circumstances. (Not my rules I hasten to add). However, if you were to explain that you would also be there to care for the dog etc etc then Liz may well consider you - especially as the bitch you are interested in is a little older etc.

Everyone has to fill in an adoption form and go through the initial phone call and homecheck, as well as follow up check, however I think, in your case, it would be worth ringing Liz and explaining your circumstances before filling in a form.

I've had GSDs all my life but now at 68 & disabled I couldn't manage a youngster, Since 2010 when my last bought or bred dog died aged 15 I've had older dogs from rescue Dax first a poppet who was 11 when I had him as his owner had to go ibto a nursing home after a third & very severe dtroke. Had a few health problems but he was an amazing dog, who sadly died in 2010 of a stroke, aged 14. After Dax I had Boyo reputed to be 11 when I had hin first as a foster, then adopted him. A lot more problems but as he had never been in a house or had any training, not even house training but had been chained up in a yard most of his life you'd expect some. Took a time but he's clean in the house now as long as he's not left Reasonable with humans in the house as long as thy don't stare or crowd him & fine out with any dog or human he meets. Alongside them is Hannah who I had at three from a friend who'd had her back from the people who'd had her from a pup & who persuaded me she'd be better off with me than stuck in a kennel. She's the boss tells the boys what to do & is fantastic with all humans & when we are out other dogs. This in spite of the fact she was returned as they said she was not good with children. Hope to go on having oldies for their last few years for many years yet.

Shes our first GSD and we went through GSD Rescue Scotland, who Im full of praise for.

With our working hours we couldn't have a pup, so Maddie was rouglhy 3-4 when we got her. We are her second home through the rescue, through no fault of her own. Her first owner had to move abroad with work and couldn't take her.

They are very upfront with you on any issues etc, no need to hide anything, for the first month you are on foster terms just in case it doens't work out. Maddie does not like cats, but she is great with all dogs and people.

It did take us a wee while to get thought the whole process but we are glad we persevered. We are very happy with her.

Absolutely agree that all the dogs in the household will have to get on - that is of paramount importance otherwise it just wouldn't work.

I would want one that was dog friendly, but I don't mind trying to iron out other minor issues at all.

If we were to get one, we would be going through breed rescue anyway, so that's not a problem.

Yes, Molly and Roxy should be fine. They welcome several different dogs in to their home with no problems at all. Molly just checks all her toys are still there afterwards when they leave.
