Please do not take a seven week old puppy. Your new puppy really needs to be with her mom and siblings at least another week.

If you feed a food with grain in it she will have to poop more. If you feed a food that is mostly meat, she will poop less. I vote for less poop. Feed three times a day to start. After feeding, wait twenty minutes then take her out and walk around the yard. Keep track of the time. She will probably do her business within 25 and 35 minutes after eating. Praise softly and give her a little treat when she goes. Keep her out another ten minutes. This is a good time to train her to come with you when you pat your leg.

If you know how much pee and poop she produces you will know if she is finished when you bring her inside so you don't get surprises five minutes later. Of course, as she gets bigger she will produce more. Don't give her freedom in the house or she will find secret spots to potty in. Keep her near you by putting a harness on her and with a cord or leash. Put her crate next to your and before you go to bed, bring her outside for rollicking play to tire her out. Put her in the crate just before you turn out the light. Get up in the middle of the night to bring her outside again for potty, then right back in the crate.

Whatever you do, don't tell her off for messing in the house - it's your fault for not anticipating her need! Invest in one of the specialist sprays (available at P@H) and just clear it up and carry on. Loads of praise when she does do it outside. Take her out very regularly to start with (every half hour during the day) so that it's always a good experience.

Personally, I try not to get up during the night unless the puppy is crying to go out. Don't carry her out, let her make her own way so she begins to associate the door with what she needs to do. She will eventually start to ask at the door - my four month old puppy now scratches at the door.

Try not to become complacent as she begins to show signs of holding it in - she still needs to be taken out regularly!

Also remember that all dogs are different and even though it may seem as though she will never get there, the penny will suddenly drop! My bitch took about two weeks - I find dogs take much longer.

By the way, I always have my puppies at seven weeks but, if you're not too confident, it may be better to leave it a week if the breeder is agreeable.
