Inflammatory bowel disease

My three yr old Goldie has had frequent and ongoing loose and watery stools with some mucas for several weeks, we took her to the vet and after an examination the vet suggested we try her on a course of metronidazole and prescription diet food, her stools returned to normal pretty quickly after starting the tablets, however within a week of stopping them and eating her normal food again it all returned.... The vet now thinks that she may have inflammatory bowel disease, she is not losing weight and is fine in herself, she is now back on a course of Metronidazole and on a very bland diet of chicken and rice and is not allowed any of her normal treats.. I have been giving her little pieces of chicken for her treats.. I wonder if any other dogsey members have experienced inflammatory bowel disease in their dogs and if so could they suggest any alternative foods/treats that would be ok to give them, other than just chicken and rice...Thank you

Hi there , I sympathise with you as my dog has the exact same problem . Athough she did not develop it until she was about 12 .
I feed her on Royal canin senstive tinned food , Royal canin intestinal food and Royal canin hypoallergenic all of which I get without a prescription online . I also get free delivery if I spend more than £60 .

http://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk/sea...FQHHGgodTjyxPA

Someone recently told me that Vitalin sensitive lamb and rice was good so I have ordered a small bag of that to try it . Being a whippet she does not eat a lot and I have to vary it .
It's just an ongoing problem and the symptoms just have to be managed as they arise .
Hope this is of some help to you

Amber has colitis and has to have a prescription diet, Hill;s WD which the vet said we could only get from him. Well he's wrong we get it on-line from Petmeds without prescription, and a 12kg bags are £10 pound cheaper than the vets.

www.petmeds.co.uk

We also give her James Wellbeloved, Crackerjacks (hypo-allergenic dog treats) have a look at these and read the back they may be suitable, we get them from Pets at Home.

Good Luck hope she goes on OK.

I have got a cat with this problem and was just going to add that http://www.vetuk.co.uk/ has got 10% off hills and royal canin prescription food. They are the cheapest I have found at the moment as my cat has d/d and royal canin sensitivity conrtol. I thought it might be helpful for those with dog on prescription diet.

Sorry I can't help about treat best of luck

Thank you everyone for your kind and helpful replies.. My dog had been on Natures menu food up until the diagnosis of Inflammatory bowel disease, now looks like i will need to find an alternative when she is off this course of tablets and and the chicken and rice diet....

Cindy my Yorkie suffered with colitis,
but could'nt have chicken or pasta
or rice as these exacerbated the condition,
but I can't remember what I did give her,
as it was quite a while ago now,and she's
no longer with me.

I had a dog with IBD which was diagnosed by an endoscopy(sp). I was told to take her off the source of protein that she had eaten all her life and find an alternative that she had never had before. She had been fed on minced chicken/biscuit and the specialist suggested a complete fish based food. This worked for me and she was fine for her rest of her life either on fish or duck based kibble.

Do hope you are able to find something that will settle her.

Sue

my gsd yoda has this condition, he was diagnosed by biopsy, his is quite severe though, as he cannot take any medication for it as he has violent, even worse symptoms to the medication, he is unusaul in this so i wouldnt expect your dog to be like this. The vet did say the best food for this was hills prescription diet ZD as it contains a totally different form of protein to any other food on the market
