Yes something a lot of people don't realise is that birds have an optimum flying weight, I didn't myself some time ago. Too heavy and the can't fly and too light can affect how they fly.

This is why maybe Ostriches have taken up running instead.

Falconers always weigh a bird before flying it as a bird that is too light will be unable to perform adequately, whereas a bird flown overweight may just take off and not bother with the coming back part of the deal.
