Dead mouse under floorboards? Live mouse perhaps? Something more sinister ?

Does she then circle and lie down?

It is very common for dogs to 'make their beds' before they lie down. Our old Kip used to do this - actually wore out a patch by the front door which was he favourite place to lie when we were out.

It does sound very much like she's trying to make herself a bed. It seems to be a natural instict - I've known many dogs do it (in fact I think Hoki is the only one that I've had who has never done this).

You have two options - put a blanket/her bed there or distract her (possibly by showing her to her own bed. If you put a blanket down its 50/50 whether she'll scrape the blanket and then lie down or whether she'll try and scrape the blanket out the way.

Just one other thought - is there any chance that she could be having a phantom pregancy? I've never had a bitch with either a real or phantom pregnancy, so don't know, but am guessing that this action could also be used by a nesting bitch.
