I kept rats a long time ago, I had a really big black male that looked like a sewer rat, he was called Tarzan. His Jane was black hooded female. I managed to rehome all of their babies that I didn't keep.

any help would be much appreciated
no clue about rats, just that I know, that they are lovely animals too

but why a couple of males?
I don't know, but wouldn't females not get along better with each other?

once I used to have Mongolian gerbils
those ones

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolian_gerbil

well, okay, firstly I got one male of them and wanted to get him company and I got an other male
and they got along very well together
also they had a really huge territory in my child's room

but one day, the younger startet to attack the older one and I had to put them apart

but not sure how that will be working if they are of one litter maybe well

I thought that it was mice who were inconntinent but not rats.
I used to have two, Thelma and Louise, who had free run of my bathroom and returned to their cage to poo.

I have 9 male rats living happily together, not all are related. Rats are very social creatures who need there own for company. The make fab pets and reccommend them for children rather than hamsters.

Male mice will rarely live together though. some do but most don't.

Sorry but neither mice nor rats are 'incontinent' nor is it true that they have no sphincter muscles. They scent mark

I have been owned by rats for a very long time and can't imagine it any other way! Congrats on your new additions - where were they from in the end?

xx

Hello! Yep - we're all well, just very busy!

Don't come on here nearly as often as I should, I stalk occasionally, but I'm on so many forums I just don't have time! XD

Well from a respectable source:
http://www.ratbehavior.org/WhyDoRatsPee.htm

Why do rats pee everywhere?
Why do some rats leave drops of pee everywhere?
Why do rats pee on food?
Why do rats pee on each other?
Conclusion
The answers to all the questions are there if you click the link but basically - It's a personal ad!

Adult male and female rats leave drops of pee everywhere to advertise their sexual availability. Pee contains a lot of information about the rat who made it! It's like a personal resumé. It tells another rat one's species, sex, age, social status, reproductive status, and individual.

Quite... it's scent marking... not a lack of sphincter muscles!
