Emmy nervy since loss of Mason

Overall, Emmy appears to have coped with losing her 'brother' better than us! But outside on/off lead she has become quite nervy with both people and other dogs. Her hackles come up and she barks like a mad thing but she is still submissive (ducks or lays down when she gets close) although it doesn't stop her running towards them! Although she is a very friendly dog, this is really scary for other owners/dogs. I want to 're-socialise' her but preferabley without terrorising everyone in sight! I'd like to take her into Whitstable town this afternoon but i'm not sure if thats too much too soon as i don't want it to have an adverse effect! What do you think? x

This is exactly how my girl is since she was attacked this week. Hope you find some answers maybe we could share them as i'm at a loose end with her too.

I daren't take her back to ringcraft I don't know if it will be all too overwhelming for her with so many strange dogs.

I don't know if this will have any long term effects but yesterday, everytime Emmy showed nervousness, i stopped and stroked her with long strokes from shoulder to hip along her side. It was a tip i was given at puppy training with my other dog but it seems to calm her down a bit with some reasuring words! Good luck xxx

I would go back to basics with her. Just little and often. Don't overwhelm her with to much activity. Maybe go out early in the morning or in the evening when there are not too many people/dogs around. Just lots of praise and ignore unwanted behaviour. She just need to regain her confidence and I imagine that will just take time

Hi MM , I agree with Berger
Our dogs notice every small change that occurs within the household, when they lose a companion they need a bit of extra attention at this time...

While at home keep Emmy busy when you can with little games and lots or chat in a bright voice, remember she will pick up on your mood from your voice.

Emmy may feel less safe without Masons protection, or that she needs to guard you in some way, when out with her.... again adopt a bright and confident voice, give praise when you can so that she will feel safe and confident with you in charge.

Have you seen this article, it may help with socialising Emmy ..
