Alsation and German Shepherd...

Ok...When i were a lad i always used to call them Alsations, it seemed everyone else did also... These days they are called German Shepherds and i never hear the name Alsation...

They are in fact the same dog aren't they? Any reason for the name change?

Anyone able to shed any light on this for me..? Or am i confused?

They are the same dog. I think the name change came about because of ww11 they didn't want a dog called after the enemy so changed from german shepards to alsation after the area they came from so i have been told.

Yes you're right Ailsasmum

It was originally known as the deutsche Schaferhunde.

At the end of WW1 it was thought that the breed would not flourish where the word German was to appear in its name, and it was decided to call the breed the Alsatian Wolf Dog after the German-French border area of Alsace-Lorraine. The “Wolf Dog” tag was later to be dropped—again as it was felt that this would prejudice the breed. In 1977, following numerous campaigns by breeders the name of the breed was changed back to the German Shepherd Dog by which it is known today.

Hope that helps
