How can I stop My dog attacking people?

Hello all, I feel as though this is a blast from the past as I have not been on for a while. So I shall start off by saying I hope everyone and their dogs are all well. Many people may remember the story with my dog seker but I shall just explain what has been happening since her recovery. Since being kept very close with us, she didnt really mingle with many people in the recovery period, now she barks at everyone who comes to the door, and more seriously attacked the postman. She is fine with myself and my partner but not with anyone else. Its been going on far to long now to ignore it and I really would appreciate some help. She constantly barks also, and whines very very much - not just when she is left alone for a while but she whines all the time. We have checked her out at the vets and they say all is well and she is as healthy as can be.
I really need to bring in some sort of training programme as we run a hotel and she just cant stay there as we are worried she may frighten/harm the customer.
Thanks for reading
Laura

Its hard to advice about aggression over the internet without seeing the dog.
Have you considered a behaviourist?

Google UKRCB or APBC for behaviourists in your area, or get a referral from your vet.

In the meantime, i would err on the side of caution, and reduce the free reign your dog has to guests and postman.
Eaach incident strenghtens the behaviour, as it is rewarding to him - adrenaline, and he "sees off the person".
You risk prosecution under the DDA as well.

Sorry, I dont know anything about your dog or the history.

Sounds like nervous aggression due to lack of socialisation?
If so, that *may* require a desensitisation and counter-conditioning programme.

Sorry to hear of your problem, it must be very worrying for you especially as it may affect your business. I'm sure some good advice will be forthcoming. Dog behaviourists can be expensive but there are some good books if you feel you could try to retrain yourself. I am trying clicker training at the moment froma book called Click to Calm which you can order from Amazon. It covers all kinds of aggressive behaviour so may be useful. Hope you get some good advice soon too.

am i right in thinking that your dog was seriouslty injured or ill at one point and had a complicated recovery ??

like the others i suggest a behaviorist but not sure in turkey what they are like ?

you could try positive reward training ( clicker etc) with new people coming and going and as much socialisation as possible - but someone with better experience will be along soon with some advice i am sure

Hi, are you still in Turkey?

If so I'd suggest buying a copy of The Cautious Canine online, it's by Patricia McConnell and may help you to work with your dog yourself

It is helpful for dogs who are fear aggressive more than anything, it sounds as if this is the case with your dog?

Hello thanks for all your replies. Yes We are still in Turkey. She is a lovely dog and has a really kind nature and it was due to the accident that made her very weary of nearly everything and anyone, her recovery time was about 3months in total and we almost lost her but she is strong and pulled through. She basically barks as soon as someone comes up to the door, and is very protective of me, if someone comes up to talk to me she will bark at them in an agressive manner. I will try looking for those books suggested on the net - thank you. In the meantime any ideas on initial training for trying to stop a dog from barking? thanks again

Hi Laura,

It is probable from what you've said that her barking is due to fear so you really need to tackle that - the cause :smt001 which the book I've mentioned will do.

You could also try perhaps using a DAP diffuser if you can get hold of one as this can calm a dog or at least take the edge off the anxiety - I've had good results with it but results vary on different dogs.

Also try not to put her in situations where she barks as she is essentially practising her behaviour. If for instance she barks at someone you are talking to, and then after a few minutes that person moves away or you move away with Seker, then Seker will think "that worked!" as to her her barking made the person get away. So try not to put her in that situation.

Also at home, try to keep her away from the front door, so the responsibility for the visitors is not hers

Do you feel she would benefit from a training programme generally? If so, there is a good one online which may be helpful if you can't find a good kind trainer.

Often teaching good basic commands will improve a dog's willingness to listen overall
