Tic Fail.

Managed to fail to successfully remove a tic yesterday. Spent quality time with the local Vet nurse playing hunt the jaws. The hand shy terrier was really good.

Given the weather I'm guessing they'll be more so am investing in a "Tic removal Gadget".

Any useful tic removal tips appreciated.

One I had after the event...

1) Put a dob of vaseline on them. They won't be able to breath and they should release...

I've heard this about vaseline and so many other things, I'm sure so much of it is old wives tales
I would stick with a "tick removal gadget" from a pet shop or the vets surgery.

I'd go for the O'Tom tick remover, of all the ones I've used that's the most simple and really conveniently small so you can literally pop it in a handbag or coat pocket.

The worst is when they get them on the eyelid as it's so difficult to get the dog to stay still long enough to get the tick remover in place and actually remove the tick!

Apparently garlic paste in food is a natural tick preventative measure.

If the tick has fed and you put vaseline on it, it may become distressed and vomit the blood back into the animal, so too much risk of spreading disease. An O'Tom tick picker is your best bet IMO. Please don't put anything onto the tick, it should be alive when removed.

one of my friends told me about the 'dizzy tick' method - but I couldnt face touching them

If you gently rub the body in circles they get dizy and let go

I just used a tic remover - was gross enough

urgh I couldn't TOUCH one!!!!

Tried that.
Failed.

I put a dab of surgical spirit on them with cotton wool. This is supposed to help make them withdraw the head.
Then grasp tick and TWIST. Never pull. Keep twisting round till you feel them let go.

I would give the old wives tales a bit of a swerve and use a professional method of tick removal to minimise the not inconsiderable health risks associated with ticks.
