This is interesting

Coconut oil may provide an effective defense against many troublesome parasites including giardia. Like bacteria and fungi, giardia can't stand up against MCFA found in coconut oil. Research has confirmed the effectiveness of MCFA in destroying giardia and possibly other protozoa.5,6,7 By using coconut oil and other coconut products every day, you may be able to destroy giardia before it can establish a toehold. In so doing you also eliminate the possibility of developing food allergies, chronic fatigue, and other related symptoms. If you're currently troubled with these conditions, coconut oil used liberally with meals may provide a source of relief. Because MCFA are quickly absorbed by the tissues and converted into energy it seems logical that those suffering from chronic fatigue would gain a great deal of benefit. Foods prepared with coconut oil, or even fresh coconut make a great energy booster.

Another possible use for coconut is for the removal of intestinal worms. In India it has been used to get rid of tapeworms. In one study it was reported that treatment with dried coconut, followed by magnesium sulfate (a laxative), caused ninety percent parasite expulsion after twelve hours.8 The authors of some pet books apparently have had success with coconut and recommend feeding animals ground coconut as a means to expel intestinal parasites. In India coconut oil is rubbed into the scalp as a treatment to remove head lice.

Tapeworms, lice, giardia, candida, bacteria, viruses, and germs of all sorts can be eliminated or at least held in check with coconut oil. For infections and intestinal complaints it seems like coconut oil is one of the best natural medicines you can use.

Giardia is a terrible condition for dogs, and I once thought my dog had it and so did my vet, but we never got around to doing a test as he diagnosed something else instead!

"All I know is it's very, very high in fat content, and I can't eat it for this reason, it would send my cholesterol soaring - if that's any help???"

That is actually an old wives tale, it is proven to HELP cholesterol... which makes sense as it grows on trees, and in my humble opinion, nothing that is natural is bad for you (except in huge quantities!) and maybe poison-ness berries and things, but you know what i mean...

Well that's very interesting then Jess, coz I came away from my heart specialist with a big list of "can eats", "eat in moderation" and big "no-no's", and guess what, the coconut was in the big "no-no" high fat category?????????????? Along with prawns and avocados too, which is surprising isn't it!!!!

Yes it used to be the case, because coconut is a saturated fat (it's the way the chains are put together and how easily it is for the body to break them) but now they are saying that there is different types of fats, and some are beneficial. The point is that WE don't actually KNOW everything, and knowledge is continually updated. However if we used a bit of common sense, we could tell that natural things are best, are are not trying to kill us. Shrimp for example are eaten by whales, which need the blubber to keep warm...uhuh i hear you say... yeah BUT if the same fat caused him to have a heart attack (ie. by clogging in his veins) that would not be a great idea for the prolferation of his species...therefore, it's a good type of fat! Nutritionists are feed info by scientists, which don't know everything, and we have to remember that, and take everything with a pinch of salt, which by the way is also not a bad thing, in moderation.
Look at the whole cholestrol thing, there was a program on it last night, idiotic! There was a giant fat man, who had cholestrol and for the past few years has been fed chosterol reducing chemicals (hidden in the margarine) and he now has a lower chosletrol, however he has not lost a bit of weight, yet he feels good about being 'healthier' HELLO! It's nuts. You know when you are heavy, (I am not the thinest thing going by the way, but i like sweeties ) and you know your diet. We don't need a scientist to overwrite our common sense, they didn't 100 years ago, and they did ok. Doesn't take a scientist to see we are eating to much of everything these days!
Sorry getting carried away, but i am sure you can see my point
