The beautiful Peggy came to us from a greyhound trainer, though she never actually raced herself – she just didn’t show any interest. Peggy has a lovely thick black coat that is becoming shinier all the time now that she’s out of kennels. Peggy is quite tall for a lady hound at 28” to the shoulder.

~ Personality ~
Generally: Quiet, initially reserved/shy but comes out of herself with time, trusting her foster parents now, very low maintenance, needs confidence building, starting to play, affectionate and loving, has a hidden cheeky side!
Up to this point, Peggy has spent all her life in the one kennel with the same dogs and people around her. As such it is taking her a wee bit of time to adjust to the massive change of moving into a home, and she is currently a bit on the overwhelmed side of things. This should not be considered as a negative point against her, she simply needs more time to continue to adjust. She is coming out of herself at a steady pace right now, and can only get more confident and engaging with time. We would love to see this girl find her forever home sooner rather than later, however, so that she can finally settle down without any more upheaval in the future.

Peggy is a quiet, amiable girl who will appear reserved when you first meet her, but please just give her some time to relax and you’ll see who she really is. Peggy is very loving, affectionate and sweet with her foster parents. She is becoming more forward and interactive all the time. She has the slightly quirky habit of rolling up her lip when being hand fed a treat, as though trying to be as dainty as possible. She is undemanding and thusly is a very low maintenance girl. Her previous owner reports of a little cheeky streak that we are yet to see, but it’s definitely in there somewhere! Peggy just needs a bit of breathing space to adjust, which she is currently doing at her own pace. She recently attended our annual walk and meet& greet and relaxed into the bustling atmosphere very well, even stretching out and falling asleep amongst all the noise and busyness.



~ In the Home ~
Generally: Very well behaved, housetrained, ok to be left with canine company, good at sharing, ok with visitors, gradually adjusting.
As mentioned, Peggy is still adjusting to the home life, and is improving daily. She has only been in her foster home for about a month. She has most definitely needs the company and direction of another dog to show her how to react in new situations. She is sharing her foster home with 4 other canines and loves them all, but has particularly bonded to one of the male greyhounds, and follows his lead in everything. This mild neophobia that she has will dissipate once she gains in confidence, and Peggy can be a confident girl, it’s just that this huge life change has left her feeling a bit lost and unsure. We feel Peggy must go to a home with another well-adjusted dog (or several!) so that she doesn’t get overly stressed in trying to figure out what to do in new situations. Setting up a routine will also be a huge step in helping Peggy overcome this issue – when she can anticipate what’s happening next, she can gain confidence from it.



Peggy has been naturally housetrained from the word go, and is very careful not to put a paw wrong in the house. She is quiet through the night and fine to be left with canine friends. She also copes fine with human visitors, and will shyly ask for a ‘hello stroke’ before going to her bed. She is quiet as a mouse and really asks for nothing, making her very easy to keep content and happy. She is clearly loving her home comforts and relishes a soft bed and warmth. She has also started to play, which is a great sign, and her favourite toy is currently a bacon Tastybone that she carries around and chews.

~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Loves and needs canine company, dog savvy, non-confrontational.
Peggy is very good with other dogs, being of a complacent and non-confrontational demeanour. As mentioned, we feel it is vital that Peggy go to a home with another dog(s) present so that she can lean on them for support and follow their lead, she very much needs guidance when introduced to new things to prevent her from panicking. She has not been officially tested with small dogs yet, and this can be carried out prior to adoption if required. We expect her to be small dog friendly, however.

~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks to heel, will be scared by loud noises, suitable to be offlead only in 100% secure areas until she gains in confidence.
Like most greyhounds, Peggy will not need a huge amount of exercise. She is currently getting an hour walk a day and seems fine with this amount. She doesn’t pull on the lead and is generally very well behaved, though sudden loud noises will scare her.

Especially at the start it is vital that any offlead areas are completely secure, as Peggy may get frightened and bolt should something unexpected happen. This potential problem should become obsolete a few months down the road, when she has bonded with new owners and gained in confidence, but at the start recall work must be done in completely secure areas such as tennis courts or high-fenced fields. Peggy is great in the car and just settles down to sleep.

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.

~ Where Am I? ~
Peggy is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Peggy is vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. She will be neutered before going to her new home. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue.

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a voluntary organisation based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please feel free to contact us.
