I wonder where all the people saying they agree with the statement have gone?

Alpha rolling and jabbing their dogs in the neck a-la Cesar Millan, probably!

i think there is a lot of confusion about what dominance is too, people will blame any old behaviour problem on the dog wanting to claim dominance when really they are just chancing it like LS said. maybe that accounts for some of the people voting that you should be alpha?

I've got Loki to sit when I come home, rather than jump up, then he gets what he wants, once I've put my shopping down, which is attention and fuss. However, someone told me he was dominating me, having had some sessions with a 'dog whisperer'.

I like CM and have never alpha rolled or jabbed any dog in the neck.
I'm no alpha male but my word is law and the dogs know that.

When I'm out walking Maggie and we meet other dogs to play with I can definitely see that they sort themselves out "rank" wise. I'm not a dog and Maggie knows this so therefore I don't believe for a second that she would think of me as "alpha".
I am the provider of stuff for her and I see my main duty as guardian. I try my best to keep her safe and by doing so have to set boundaries.
I think opportunistic is the best description that someone gave.

Neither have I ... and my word is law too. I strive to be alpha female, but I never truly will be because I'm too much of an old softie, but Tai listens to me and respects me, and mostly obeys me.

Just wanted to add that we have been down the whole route of "dominance" with our last dog courtesey(sp) of a dog listener person. It was a total disaster and is not a theory I would ever want to subscribe to again.

But I'm sure there is positive and negatives experiences with everything.
